Emily (Washington) Post Etiquette

Face it. Washington Post reporters are some of the most pleasant people on the face of the earth.

Some samples showing just how darn nice they are, taken from their washingtonpost.com online discussions.

Michael Abramowitz:

  • “Good question.”
  • “Good point!”
  • “Yes, you are right.”
  • “That’s an interesting observation.”

Jeffrey Birnbaum:

  • “Well, Sanibel, as usual, you put your finger on it.”
  • “Your analysis sounds right to me.”
  • “I don’t know if we can or we can’t. Your analysis otherwise is spot on, however.”
  • “Two excellent questions.”

Jim VandeHei:

  • “This is a good question to tackle first.”
  • “Good political eye, Louisville.”

David Broder:

  • “Your analysis makes sense to me.”
  • “Your arguments are perfectly phrased.”
  • “Your raise the fundamental question.”
  • “Thanks for alerting me.”

Marc Fisher:

  • “Agreed–I’ve found the RFK ushers and ticket takers to be by and large unusually friendly.”
  • “Thanks for the defense.”
  • “You’re right.”
  • “Fabulous.”
  • “Even more fabulous.”
  • “Great idea.”

Extreme Mortman is so inspired by these niceties, I’d like to take a whirl at being so cheerful to be around. So here’s a fake question and how I would respond, if Extreme Mortman chatted at washingtonpost.com.

Question: Don’t you know they carefully pre-screen the questions? And you yourself have selectively edited the answers to make a flimsy, junvenile point!  What are you — a lunatic?

Answer: A lovely question. Thank you for being so nice. I agree. Makes sense. You’re right. You’re smart. Want my lunch money?
