Why Obama Will Wynn The Nevada Caucus

January 12, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Now here’s why we love both politics and Las Vegas.

The Washington Post reports this delicious story:

A teachers’ union filed federal suit late yesterday trying to shut down nine Democratic caucus sites to be held next Saturday in casino halls along Las Vegas’s famed “Strip”, arguing that those sites give unfair advantage to union workers who are backing Sen. Barack Obama.

The story links to the suit, provided by Nevada blogger Jon Ralston.

We’re thrilled for the link because, like most Americans, we were dying to learn which nine hotels boast the offending At-Large precincts.  We read through the suit and found these Strip hotels listed:

  • the Bellagio
  • Luxor
  • the Mirage
  • the Rio
  • Caesar’s Palace
  • the Paris
  • the Flamingo
  • Wynn Las Vegas
  • New York, New York

The suit says that because the Precincts were not established in accordance with Nevada law, holding the At-Large Caucuses at these locations violates Nevada law.

That may be the case, but perhaps more intimidating than a lawsuit may be the fact that this is the guy counting the votes …

… and this is what he’ll do to anyone voting for Hillary Clinton:

Hmmmm. This is a caucus, not a primary, and thus presumably being operated (and paid for) by the Party. Chances are really good that the party has a First Amendment right to ignore the state law on a matter of of nominating procedure.

Maryland just went through this - after an unrelated state court case in ‘06, the State Election Board (w/o public notice) changed the state’s 35 year old policy of allowing 17-year-olds who would be 18 by general election day to vote in the primary election. When a few outraged citizens lit fires under the two Parties, causing them to remonstrate (and threaten suit), the State AG did an Emily Littela: “Never Mind”.

I love it when unions fight it out over WHICH of them is being “unfair”!

Holding the caucus sites on the Strip puts the teachers’ union at a terrible disadvantage - move them back to neutral sites the way Iowa did.

    Like schools.

Needless to say, I just love this, even though (as much as I hate to admit it) I think the teachers’ union is right on this one.

As for Obama, he might wynn only if he doesn’t get trumped by Hillary!
