The Specter Of Chris Matthews

Think about recent great campaign battles, and these might come to mind:  Bill Weld versus John Kerry, Jesse Helms versus Jim Martin, Hillary Clinton versus Rick Lazio.  And many others.

Will a 2010 Senate races between Arlen Specter and Chris Matthews join that pantheon of greatness?

Here’s the latest, from Arlen Specter’s appearance on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” this morning:

Steve Scully: “I want to ask you about Chris Mathews and his possible run, because that has been talked about quite frequently in this town and in Pennsylvania.”

Arlen Specter:  “No, I have never talked to Chris about it; I’ve talked to Chris with some frequency.  I talked to him last week on his program.  He had a perfect opportunity to bring it up, but he didn’t, and you’ll pardon me, Steve, if I don’t bring it up—I’m not giving anybody any ideas.  I’m not running away from it, but I’m not soliciting it either. “

Specter may not be soliciting it, but political junkies are salivating over it.
