The National Pastimes: Baseball and Federal Spending
January 30, 2007 at 11:40 pm
It was bound to happen at some point: Runaway spending in Washington meets runaway spending in baseball.
Congress Tuesday agreed to a $463 billion spending plan that includes for Washington, as we learn in the Washington Post:
a $20 million upgrade to the Navy Yard Metro station near the new Nationals baseball stadium
Not $20 million on a player, mind you, which wouldn’t seem out of the norm these days. Nor $20 million on the stadium itself, which could buy a whole lot of fancy sky boxes to be lapped up by lobbyists entertaining the folks who appropriated the baseball money. No, it’s $20 million to upgrade a subway station somewhere near the stadium.
In keeping with the tradition of overpriced baseball players nowadays, for $20 million we gotta hope that subway station is on steroids.
