I first registered to vote for George McGovern, and the result was service on a NYC jury. He dropped his vice-presidential candidate, Thomas Eagleton, for having been electroshocked for depression, and I never forgave McGovern, or voted for him. He got what he deserved in the election.

I join in wishing Sen. McGovern a happy 85th.

On the issue of not mentioning his (exemplary) war record during the 1972 camapign, while I'm sure humility played a part, it also would not have played well with the "base" that drove his candidacy.

I sincerely wish him a happy birthday and offer heartfelt thanks for his exemplary military service.

Following mother's advice on politeness, I'm going to say nothing at all about his post-World War II activites.

A hearty salute to Senator McGovern on his 85th. While I confess agreeing with the senator on little, I was reminded by Stephen Ambrose's last book The Wild Blue, a memorable episode of Ollie North's War Stories and a mention by Bob Novak on whatever CNN program he was on that day that George McGovern was one of America's truly outstanding bomber pilots during World War II and is a bona fide war hero.

The amazing thing is that Senator McGovern rarely if ever mentioned these experiences during his 1972 campaign. That was to say the least, strategically unwise. Still it showed admiirable humility of the sort we never saw from the 2004 Democratic nominee when describing his admirable if considerably less distinguished war (and antiwar) record.

This has been Private Annis reporting for duty, Extreme General.
