We learn:

The rock group Heart, angry that its ’70s hit “Barracuda” is being used as the unofficial theme song for Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, is taking aim at the Alaska governor. The song, a nod to the “Sarah Barracuda” nickname Palin earned on the basketball court in high school, was dusted off for her appearance at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul on Wednesday.

All of which makes us wonder, what if the Democrats had played “Crazy On You” after Bill Clinton addressed their convention?

    Wow. Like who actually listens to ALL the words of this tune. I think it’s a fine song and I think the Campaign should have someone else sing it and use it ALL THE TIME.

    Tell Heart to pound salt. I’m tired of ‘progressives’ being so completely asinine about this issue.

    This is sung by a WOMAN about a MAN, and it’s possible that they know their song would hit a little too close to home for a particular democrat running for President.

    Fine. It’s a boomer song anyway. Go with Not That Kind of Girl by Paulina Rubio.

    Of course, had the Wilson sisters embraced the use of the song, they would have been teh awesome all over again.

    They’re entirely within their rights. They own the copyright. I was under the impression that conservatives were fairly bullish on copyright laws and compliance thereof (Mary Bono’s Copyright Extension Act, 1998). Guess it just depends.

    @Glenn:

    Wrong. They’re within their rights to complain….but they signed away rights to play their songs. They get royalties, or their label does, and whatever stadium or radio station or whoever has paid the fee gets to play it.

    They don’t like it? Tough. The McCain campaign is within their legal rights to play it at whatever venue has the right license. They can choose not to play it, as they did for John Cougar Whatevercamp, but it’s up to them. I hope they keep playing it as long as they want, and I don’t give a damn what the Wilson sisters think. They don’t own the rights you think they do: they sold them.

    As for Heart’s awesomeness…..whatever their politics, they had a couple of awesome power pop songs. That doesn’t make me care what they thing about anything.

    Ha. The Wilson sisters ought to be glad that anybody is still listening to their music at all. If they didn’t get their royalties, that’s one thing. But if they got their dough, then shut up all ready. You’re entertainers. Or… at least, you used to be. What in the world happened to you, Nancy? You look like Toti Fields!

    @DJ—
    So you’re certain the RNC had the proper ASCAP license in this case? Because they did not for the Mellencamp song that they had to pull.
