Beating The DoleDrums

Thanks to the sensational Below the Beltway for picking up on our crusade for bloggers to mark Saturday’s tenth anniversary of the FDA’s approval of Viagra by allowing, for one hour, all the erectile-dysfunction spam that gets caught in our filters to actually get posted.

Below the Beltway helpfully points us to this Bob Dole in retirement Wikipedia page — which does a great roundup of Bob Dole-related Viagra history.

Here’s another Bob Dole/Viagra resource.  Look closely and you might even spot Britney Spears.  Easy boy.

I've no idea how to categorize this one

I have found that by not accepting cookies, except when absolutely necessary, I have eliminated much of the SPAM that I used to get. Also, plug-ins that we are urged to download are sometimes packed with spyware and bots that generate SPAM, so I avoid them. I miss some of the little dancing animations, but most of that is just nonsense.

BTW, if you are starting a new site design, don’t open your site with a Flash or other plug-in required software. According to Application Development Trends, 88% of web users STILL do not download plug-ins to view content, so a Flash intro page is like erecting a brick wall in front of your site. If you want maximum exposure, provide standard HTML routes to your content.

Also, a technique that I have used with clients to help ensure my emails get their attention: I put their name (either formal or informal) in the lead of the Subject line, for example: Mortman: Here are the SPAM countermeasures you wanted.

I haven’t gotten any mail from that Nigerian financier or Viagra peddlers in years.
