					<description>Sorry to have to make this known, but Carl Stokes was the first African-American
to serve as a mayor of a major American city.  Stokes was elected as Cleveland's
mayor in 1966, and served from January 1967 until January 1971.

					<description>I suggested that perhaps you did not consider Gary, Indiana a &quot;major city,&quot; but surely you consider Cleveland a major city.  Carl Stokes was elected mayor of Cleveland on November 7, 1967, on the same day Richard Hatcher was elected mayor of Gary.  I know this; I was there.  (Gary, not Cleveland.)  And it was in all the papers -- you could look it up.</description>
