Extreme Trivia #18

First, the answer to last week’s Extreme Trivia question. In which movie did the below character (the guy in the hat) say: “Our source was the New York Times.”

So happy that so many folks correctly said, “Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.” (1964) Among the winners: Jay Webber of the great blog Solo Dialogue, Rob “Zeit” Geist, F.T. Rea of the great blog Slantblog, and Extreme Trivia cornerstone Peter Roff.
Now, the next Extreme Trivia question. If Sen. Joe Lieberman loses in the August 8 Connecticut primary, he will become the first incumbent Democratic Senator to lose a re-election primary since Illinois Sen. Alan Dixon lost to Carol Moseley-Braun in 1992. Question: Who was the last incumbent Republican Senator to lose a re-election primary and when?

Jacob Javits in 1980 ( to Al D’Amato)

In 1980 Jack Javits lost the New York Republican Senatorial primary to Al D’Amato… but remained on the ballot as the candidate of the now-defunct Liberal Party. D’Amato went on to defeat Javits and former Congressman Elizabeth Holtzman in the November election.

…wasn’t it Shelia Frahm who was appointed by Gov. Bill Graves to fill out Bob Dole’s term. She was appointed Senator in 1996 then ended up losing to Sam Brownback in special election primary to fill out the whole term.

hmmm…wasn’t it Sen Sheila Frahm (KS) who was appointed to fill Dole’s seat - then was knocked out in a special election primary by Sam Brownback. The special was to fill out the remainder of the term. this might be a technicality or I guess it could all depend on the meaning of the word incumbent. incumbent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incumbent) here doesn’t mention the word elected — it merely says the current holder of political office.

I was mistaken - the last Republican (?) to lose a primary was New Hampshire’s Bob Smith - who was defeated by now-Sen. John Sununu… although Smith’s status as a Republican was ambiguous, having left the party for a short while for status as an independent over some cranky reason…
