40 Years

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the flash fire that swept through the capsule of Apollo 1, instantly killing astronauts Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.  January 27th, 1967.  It was also the day of Extreme Mortman’s birth.

Fast forward 19 years nearly to the day: Jan. 28th, 1986.  The space shuttle Challenger explodes 73 seconds after launch, killing all seven on board.

For me, it’s a day to mark a special birthday.  But for all Americans and lovers of the space program, it’s a weekend to remember those who lost their lives in the brave new world of science and exploration.
