Uh-oh.  Now they’ve done it. The Democratic Congress is in trouble.

The national political school marm has spoken.  Norman Ornstein tells the Washington Post this about Democratic leaders strong-arming Republicans:

“They’re on thin ice now.  I’m getting uneasy about this lack of amendments. … They’re getting to the point where you’re past the initial period where you’ve got an excuse to operate with a firm hand. It’s going to be increasingly difficult to rationalize.”

Did you hear that, Madame Speaker?  THIN ICE!  You’re getting Normstein all uneasy.  Soon it’ll be double secret probation for all of youse.

The Dems have now made two attempts to flex their 2006 election muscles and failed. This might encourage backsliding Republicans to rejoin the fight. And then what Harry?

Flex their muscles? The words “atrophy” or “flaccid” come to mind, and most especially in refernce to the tiny muscles between Harry Reid’s prominent ears. The only hard-on the Dems will get is when all pretense is finally dropped and they vote to pull out the troops. Of course, with the Dems principles can always wait until the next election is over–as they must in this case–so that their true intentions can be concealed from the mass of moderate Americans. The Nutroots are exacting a price that the Harry’s and Nancy’s and Murtha’s cannot cover.

This would be immense fun if it had no national security consequences. On the other hand, given what idiots the Republicans have also been for the past six years if the next big one takes out the Capitol in full session it might not be such a bad thing after all.

Professor Ornstein is a romantic. He actually believes that the Republicans acted the way they did because they were Republicans. In fact, they did what they did because they were the majority, and now the Democrats are doing the same. When Professor Ornstein finally realizes this, we will be able to measure his character by the intellectual honesty with which he confronts that realization.

The problem with the D’s is that Mitch McConnell is effectively in charge of the Senate. He’s as canny a minority leader as I’ve seen around there in some time. If any thing will save David Petraeus’ bacon, it’s McConnell.

Oh yeah, Norman Ornstein is a huge pantywaist, being surprised that the D’s are acting like the Concentration Camp Guards because they are in majority. It’s what majority’s do, Norman!

    Jesus wept.
