McLean, McCain, McClinton

February 3, 2008 at 7:08 am

As many regular readers of this blog know, the Extreme family shacks up in McLean, Virginia — on the poorer working-class Sephardic side of town.

But we always get civic pride when the other side of the tracks gets noticed. Typically it’s for their boundless treasure.

Witness today’s Washington Post story: “Clinton, McCain Lead Parties In Washington Area Cash Race: Democrats Raise More Than Twice as Much as GOP”:

  • “McLean was the only Virginia Zip code in Clinton’s top 10 for the region.”
  • “Former governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, who has been lagging in fundraising and the polls, raised $168,000, finding pockets of support in McLean…”
  • “In Virginia, McCain has had access to the fundraising networks of Davis and Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.). He was most successful in raising money from residents of McLean …”
  • “McLean ranked seventh in the region and 26th nationally, donating $1 million.”

Yes, this notoriety leads to even grander dreams of life outside the shtetl.

First, our last trivia answer:  Jim Webb’s connection to the early 1980s hit song, “Believe it Or Not,” the theme to the TV show “Greatest American Hero.”

And the correct question:  Joey Scarbury, who wrote “Believe It Or Not,” was discovered by singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb’s father.

Credit to Phineas J. Whoopee for this:

“Jim Webb — the songwriter, not the senator — known for such hits as “Up, Up, and Away,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” and “MacArthur Park” discovered Joey Scarbury or Scarborough, who sang the Greatest American Hero Theme.”

Also noteworthy was Richarda:

“Something about Mr. Katt’s (who played the Hero) father - William Tallman, who played Perry Drake on the old “Perry Mason” show (and had an interesting back-story of his own)?”

Now, the next Extreme Trivia answer: The only U.S. aircraft carrier permanently deployed abroad.
