McCain Making Inroads Among Jewish Voters

November 1, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Today’s Washington Post-ABC News daily tracking poll, just released:

Obama holds a 53 to 44 percent lead over McCain, unchanged from yesterday, and little in the survey suggests that trimming the margin would be an easy feat.

Unchanged from yesterday — but a significant change from 2004, in regards the Jewish vote.

In 2004 the Jews went 76% for John Kerry and 24% for George Bush.

Today’s Post/ABC News tracking poll shows among Jews 70% for Obama and 29% for McCain.

If that holds on Election Day, it will be the best Jewish showing for a Republican presidential candidate since 1988, when George Bush got 35% of the Jewish vote to Michael Dukakis’ 64%.

Arnold’s Judgment Day Is Also Columbus Day

November 1, 2008 at 3:01 am

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Friday before the 2008 election, in Columbus, OH:

Headlining an event titled “Judgment Day,” California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger tonight delivered an impassioned pitch for electing GOP presidential nominee John McCain before a packed arena of supporters.

While the former bodybuilder and moderate Republican started his pitch on a humorous note — suggesting Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama should come to his Arnold’s Classic bodybuilding in Ohio next spring “because he needs to do something about those skinny legs” and because he needs to “beef up those scrawny little arms” — the governor quickly pivoted to attack Obama as a liberal akin to European socialists.

“I left Europe four decades ago because socialism has killed opportunities there,” he said, sparking an extended round of applause. “In recent years, Europe has realized its mistakes, has begun rolling back some of its ’spread the wealth’ policies… But now Senator Obama says he wants to pursue those same ’spread the wealth’ ideas.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Thursday before the 1988 election, in Columbus, OH:

‘’I only play the Terminator in my movies.  But let me tell you, when it comes to the American future, Michael Dukakis will be the real Terminator.'’

Can Lorne Michael Move Poll Numbers?

October 28, 2008 at 8:48 pm

Economic plans don’t work.  Policy announcements don’t work.  Major speeches don’t work.

So what does move poll numbers for Republicans these days?

Would you believe “Saturday Night Live”?

Here’s an interesting excerpt from WPXI’s coverage of the Jack Murtha-Bill Russell race in Pennsylvania’s 12th CD, where the GOP has announced new ads:

Another factor, political analysts said, is recent polling showing Murtha with a four-point lead over Russell. Ron Bonjean, aide to former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, said Murtha’s recent statements and last weekend’s Saturday Night Live skit spoofing Murtha are shifting public opinion.

If an SNL skit can really shift public opinion, we might have to reconsider the Austin Powers movies.  SNL executive producer Lorne Michaels inspired the Dr. Evil character.  But he may not be evil after all.  Just really, really all powerful.

Maybe he can move global temperatures next.

It’s A Clothes Race In Oregon

October 28, 2008 at 9:07 am

Here’s an interesting development in the class wars from today’s Washington Post.

On the op-ed page, Richard Cohen takes this shot at Bill Kristol (emphasis added):

Especially in the Weekly Standard, Palin was acclaimed as a tribune of the people. As for her critics, they were dismissed as “liberal media” types who were not, like conservative editors and TV commentators, one with the people. Kristol hit this theme hard, having somehow absorbed Wal-Mart sensitivities while living most of his life in either New York or Washington where, as I can personally attest, real Americans are encountered only when summoned to carry out home repairs. You can learn a lot this way.

Could Cohen be implying that Kristol really is country club Republican?

Probably matters how you define country club Republican.

Fortunately, the Post provides that definition — in its news pages.

From the Post’s coverage today of the Oregon Senate race and Gordon Smith (emphasis added):

Smith, looking the part of a country club Republican in a blue blazer and bright yellow sweater vest, addressed reporters from a lectern labeled “Democrats for Smith.” Two of the 22 registered Democrats flanking him sported Obama pins.

So, if we’re to believe the Washington Post, all you need to be a country club Republican is a yellow sweater?  Well, if the below yellow sweater-wearer is any indication, just one more question: where do we sign up?
