Happy Tenth, C-SPAN Radio

Ten years ago today, C-SPAN Radio went on the air.  It filled that valuable niche in broadcasting that was, at the time, inadequately served by airport parking lot radio.

No, seriously, in Washington C-SPAN Radio replaced all-jazz station WDCU at 90.1 on the FM dial.  Just prior to launching, Brian Lamb told the Washington Post:  “There won’t be any commercials, and there won’t be any auctions, and there won’t be any on-air pitches for money.”  Lamb sympathized with unhappy jazz fans but said “C-SPAN has its own agenda.”  Lamb: “It’s not a pleasant day for somebody who loves jazz.”

Perhaps that was the case then.  But ten years later, what we lack in the opportunity to dance to jazz we make up in the opportunity to dance to LBJ tapes.
