Tony Snow Is “All For Blogs”

February 21, 2007 at 4:13 pm

C-SPAN just ran last night’s National Press Club event where Tony Snow turned the tables.  He grilled the White House press corps.  (The Examiner’s Yeas & Nays explains more here).

At one point Snow brought up blogs, and posed this question to the panel:

I am all for blogs.  People ought to be empowered.  We have got this new democratic age of the media.  It is amazing, you get this hateful stuff that comes flying around.  One of the most important takeaways, not only should you not believe your own press, you should not believe the opposition’s blog?

Check out the full video of the program at C-SPAN’s web site here.

I have to disagree with this characterization of Snow at the Press Club. He didn’t grill the press, and ceratainly didn’t “turn the tables.” I watched the entire piece, and Snow was remarkably friendly, candid, and non-confrontational. As a critic of this Administration, it was new to actually get the feeling Snow was being sincere; I doubt the WhiteHouse approved of everything he said. He made several open references to the Administration’s tactics in manipulating the press, all in candor. In additon, he shared with reporters personal stories of his family life, and others did in kind. It wasn’t some sort of cross-fire feeling of tention in the air.
